As time progressed, she was getting more and more jumpy, which said a lot for her. Layne didn't consider herself someone that worried needlessly. There had really been only a few situations in life she had faced that had truly made her nervous to this point, in fact, she could count the times on her fingers. Though this wasn't, by far, the worst case of nerves she'd ever had. No, that time in that one cave had probably been the worst, when those creatures, which she still hadn't figured out what they actually were, had tried to kill her and drag her away. Well...she hadn't ever gone to that cave again, no matter what treasure was supposed to be inside. Yeah, that had been the worst case by far, but she was getting the same vibe here as she had gotten there. Which was just plain silly. She had been in plenty of tight situations before this, so she should be fine with whatever it was that she was going to face.
At the same time she wished that she had someone here with her. Even if her dating life hadn't been exactly up to par, she had plenty of friends that she could have asked to come with her...or at least she could have told them...or something. Bah! She had this by herself! Here she was just being a chicken. Yeah, that had to be it, because there was obviously nothing wrong here. Sheesh, she hadn't even seen anyone yet, so how could she say that this was going to be creepy? Aside from...how creepy the place was. But she'd been on the wrong side of towns before and hadn't ever felt out of her league. This was her life, she shouldn't be worried about a few shadows, an odd owl hooting, the fact that this informative had a serial killers name, or that this looked like the classic drug running side of town. Oh no, not at aaaaalllll.
This pep talk was not making her feel any better-
Oh God...what was that?
Layne had stopped abruptly when she saw the person standing on the porch. He couldn't have hardly been any taller than she was, though he had a lot more...weight. It didn't look like hardly any of it was fat. Why was anyone standing on their porch looking like he was? Swallowing hard, Layne stood there for a second, peeking at him from under her lashes and once more thinking she should take her cab drivers advice and just get the hell out of here. If he was still sitting there, she could turn around and make a break for it, without meat head here getting any ideas of following her. That was to say if the cab driver had remained. She doubted he had, with how terrified he had seemed just over the area. One look at this guy and he would be running in the opposite direction. Not...that she could really blame him. She wanted to be doing that exact same thing right now too.
If he just...wouldn't look quite so much like he was ready to kill her and drag her body somewhere, than she might not be so afraid. From pure reflexes Layne took a half step back, eyes flickering back and forth as if trying to plot her escape route. 'Come on...it's a harmless man. He probably snuggles teddy bears in his spare time.' That really didn't do much to comfort her, but she did decide that she was as big a chicken as possible, which was unsettling to a girl that prided herself in being courageous. With a steadying breath, she took a step toward him, and than another, her hand resting on her hip, close to her gun. If worse came to worse, she could defend herself. Right? Right! Of course she'd be able to...except he seemed to be getting thicker and thicker the closer he got. God was he big. "Hello, Ashley Beecher?", she asked as she got closer. "My name is Layne, a Mr. Jameson told me you might have a lead on the location of the Archadian King's crest of ancient times. Would you happen to know anything about that?" Layne willed her knees to stop with this whole trying to give out on her thing. Hopefully Mr. Jameson would ring a bell to him...because the man had made it sound like he knew Ashley at least somewhat. So...yeah, hopefully. She really wished she had someone else with her...really, she did.

LAYNE N. RILEY HEY THERE, THEY CALL ME LAYNE AND I'M CURRENTLY 24 YEARS OLD. I'M FROM THE WORLD OF IVALICE WHERE I AM A TREASURE HUNTER. I GO FOR GUYS AND I WILL THROW MY WEIGHT BEHIND NEUTRAL. ------------------------------------------------- Weapon:- 92FS-9mm: A handgun with a fast firing rate and a large magazine to give it a higher total ammo capacity.
- M9: This is a long ranged weapon with a faster firing rate that makes it slightly weaker.
Abilities: - Firearms/Marksmanship: Due to her fathers training, Layne is well versed when it comes to weapons of almost any kind. She can take up guns especially with the ease born of using them often, and almost never misses her mark. If she's aiming at you, chances are she's going to hit you.
- Survival: Having been trained on the ability to adapt and survive, this young woman could be dropped into the wilderness with nothing and survive with as much ease as humanly possible. This comes in handy on expeditions that don't always go as planned.
- Problem solving: Having always been an intelligent girl, Layne can, given the time, figure out most problems that she is faced with. Be it locks she has to pick, to the most advances cover ups on ancient treasures, she can usually solve whatever the problem is.
Personality: Layne has always been a strategist. While young she would play chess with her father and it grew from there. Usually she tends to think something over for a tad bit longer then she needs to, which can get her in trouble at times where she needs to quickly make a decision. Once she has reached a decision however, she can be quite stubborn in that she very rarely gives up and will stick to whatever decision she has made. This includes walking into reaaaally bad situations when she won't admit that she made the wrong decision. It can be hard for her to admit that she was wrong or that someone else had a better idea, especially if she has somewhat of a rivalry with that person. Despite being a thinker, Layne is quiet by no means. Though she doesn't needlessly chit chat with just anyone and everyone, she has no problems speaking her mind, standing up for what she believes in, or telling anyone her opinions. Along with that comes a sarcastic tongue and a sharp wit. She can easily joke back with people, though her jokes can be, as mentioned before, full of sarcasm. Despite her father having a position in the military and growing up with respect for the government, her years as a treasure hunter have made that respect lax. If she needs to go above the government to accomplish something, she normally doesn't have a problem doing so, though she wouldn't want her mother to know that. History: There was nothing tragic about Layne's early life. She was raised in a normal family, mother, father and one older brother. Her mother was a stay at home mom, dad was in the Nabradia military, retired since the previous war. She never had to worry about where the next meal came from. Her house was stable and full of love. Because of living through a war, her father decided that his children needed to be able to defend themselves in case of attack. Thus he would periodically take them out to learn how to use different firearms. Both her and her brother excelled, competing with each other to soar in their abilities. Perhaps due to the stable childhood, Layne was always left desiring a more 'exciting life'. When she turned eighteen, she decided she wanted to travel the world and become independent. The first place she decided to go to was Rozarria, intrigued by the ancient history and the beauty and grace of the culture in that country. When she made it to the country or Rozarria, Layne had no more money left to her name. But this was an adventure, and she refused to wire to her family to ask for any. So she set out and found a job at a local museum as a tour guide for the building. Having always been intrigued with artifacts and treasure, Layne felt at home surrounded by exactly that. After a few months of working there, the manager decided to go on campaigns for business, sending someone on trips to retrieve artifacts and having that person sponsored. It was all a ploy to get more customers and their museum name out there more. Deciding that he needed someone with a pretty face to send, Layne was approached for the position. Having been interested in such for years, she jumped at the opportunity. Thus, she went from a tour guide to a treasure hunter, or so was romanticized. Taking survival courses, she got prepared for the whole routine, but to her, it was more then a job. For years after that, Layne went on the expeditions, bringing back artifacts and treasures for the museum and building a name for herself. Many treasures and some years later, the invasion happened. Layne, still living in Rozarria, got a letter from her mother, very old and sent to many different places before it finally reached her. Not knowing what to think of this, she opened it and had a letter telling her of the events that had happened in Nabradia recently. It spoke of the wedding that took place between the prince of Nabradia and the Princess of Dalmasca, and it also told her that her father and brother had been called to arms during the invasion that had destroyed Nabradia. Her father had been killed, while her brother was missing. The news devastated her, and so she immediately tried to get across the border to return to Nabradia, (Or what was left) and find her mother. She was denied access, with the officials not letting anyone cross the border as of that moment. Unable to stand that, Layne snuck across and managed to find transportation to what had used to be a small, yet proud country. It would take her months after to finally locate her mother. After finding her, Layne decided that she would return to Rozarria with her. Sneaking them both across the border once more, she settled her mother in a small, yet comfortable home. Only after she had seen to the comforts of her mother did she return to the museum. Despite her fathers death and her brothers disappearance, Layne never became an angsty woman, never vowed for revenge. She took it in stride - despite being devastated - and focused all her energy into taking care of her mother, continuing to go on expeditions for the money to care for her. It was only after a long while though, that Layne decided she didn't want to look at her exploits from behind glass. No, she was the best, a true treasure hunter, and so she quit her job, becoming independent and going to seek treasure for her own self, being able to supply a comfortable living for her mother while traipsing all across the country herself. (Something she liked the best) The fall of Vayne Solidor was very rewarding, and Layne finally could feel that her father was avenged. Her brother is still missing, but because she's never seen a body or proof of his death, she refuses to believe he's dead. So she continued to seek out treasure to sell and maintain a life for what little remains of her family, hoping that one day her brother will come back to them. Unfortunately life had other ideas for her, and it seemed, for the rest of the world. Layne found herself and her mother in a strange world called Gran Pulse after the events that shattered her world, and the many others. Despite the war that's raging around them, Layne's found yet another paradise of treasures and old artifacts in the ruins around Pulse, and has once more started to seek out those artifacts. |
