"BIP! System Error. All engines malfunctioning. Source....unidentified." Penelo's head shot up from the map she had been examining and she darted to the front of the ship. Frantically, she tried to get the engines working again. She had no idea what could have caused a disaster like this and apparently neither did the ship. Nothing she tried worked and she swore as the machine began to rattle and shake ominously. Her ship pitched violently and flipped over, sending the blonde crashing into a wall. The blow to her head made her vision go dark and the last thought she had before passing out was 'Vaan will never forgive me for leaving him.'
Sunlight beat down firmly on her eyelids and Penelo groaned, flopping an arm over her face to shield her eyes. Her head felt as though it was moments from splitting apart and she cursed Vaan quietly. She should know by now that drinking with him never ended well. She'd swear he cheated but she hadn't been able to prove it yet. One day she would and on that day he'd better be prepared to run because she would give him the worst tongue lashing of his life.
After a few minutes her head began to feel less like there was something inside trying to break out so she risked sitting up. It wasn't comfortable but she didn't feel like she was about to throw up, which was always a bonus. She opened her eyes only to hiss and squint until they were almost shut again. It was bright this morning, unusually so since Lowtown wasn't exactly riddled with windows. Had she fallen asleep outside? Oh dear, she'd never live it down if she had. Her friends would make fun of her forev-
The blonde's eyes shot open as she remembered what had actually happened. She hadn't spent her night cheerfully trying to out drink her friend. She'd been in her sky ship and the engines had stopped working. Judging by the pain in her head she wasn't dead which was something of a surprise. She had been sure that her plummet to the ground was only going to end one way but apparently she had gotten lucky. More likely, someone had seen her crashing ship and managed to tow her to safety.
Rubbing gently at her head, she staggered to her feet and took a careful look around. She was surrounded by grass and...more grass. Well, that ruled out being towed to safety unless her rescuer had changed their mind and just decided to leave her at the mercy of the elements. So she had actually survived that crash landing then. That was...borderline ridiculous. She had been heading to Bhujerba so she had been flying much higher than she usually would. Surely there was no way to survive a fall from that high.
Turning in a circle, Penelo took in the landscape and was pushed further into confusion. The scenery was nothing like anything she had seen on Ivalice before. It certainly didn't fit the land between Rabanastre and Bhujerba. It vaguely resembled Lemures actually, though with less trees. She briefly entertained the idea that she had managed to get dragged to some other place that no one thought actually existed but dismissed it just as quickly. There had been no magick artefacts on board that would have done that so unless there was a sentient land that just felt like stealing a random girl from the skies...
Hovering between confused, irritated and slightly frightened, she took stock of her situation. She didn't know where she was, how she'd gotten there or even how she was alive but unless she was wrong that lump of metal poking out of the grass looked familiar. "My ship!" She ran towards the object to find that all that was left of her ship was the steering wheel, what may have once been a door and a mangled frying pan. With a morose look, she held up the remains of the pan and sighed. Well, now what was she supposed to do?
Dropping the pan, she focused on rolling the door over and was glad she did when she saw her staff poking out from beneath it. Strapping the weapon to her back, the blonde immediately felt calmer at the familiar weight. She had her staff, her knife, her spells and her previous experience at surviving in the wild. Well, that would simply have to do until she found civilisation. Her lip began to tremble as reality hit her. She was completely lost in an unfamiliar place with no means of transport. She'd never been in this kind of situation without Vaan before and it frightened her.
With a scowl, she pinched her leg and reprimanded herself. "There's no use in panicking now, I'm supposed to be past that. I can panic when I find other people." If there wasn't anyone around to help her then she would simply have to help herself; she wasn't a little girl any more, she could handle this. Picking a direction, she started walking, one hand on her knife in case something popped up and tried to take a chunk out of her.

“Come on Fritz.”
The urge was accompanied by a steady pressure from his calves in order to prod the bird into a higher speed. While they went along, Dajh kept his eyes peeled on the vast area that made up the Steppes. He’d been out riding to check on the second pasture when he had witnessed the strange scene in the sky. Some sort of airship it had looked like, had gone down on the other side of the large plains. Or…he figured it had gone down. When he had seen it go streaking through the sky, the dark skinned young man had figured that it was going through some troubles. He’d taken enough flying lessons from his father and been around airships enough to be able to identify when one was having problems. And there had been some serious problems with that particular ship.
Worried for the pilot and possible passengers, Dajh had caught up his wild stallion chocobo and gone to look in on the airship with the problems within. Hopefully everything had gone alright and even if there had been problems they were able to land the airship. Thankfully the Steppes provided the perfect place in which a man could safely land the ship if they needed to. Instead of worrying though, Dajh simply turned his mind to that thought. Of course whoever it was that had been piloting the thing had been able to land before the ship had fallen apart. Of course! Because in this life absolutely everything worked out for the better. Yup…
Cresting one hill on the Steppes, Dajh finally saw it. Reining in his chocobo, the younger man surveyed the heap of metal that had found a resting spot in amongst the tall grasses of the plains that surrounded the Steppes. “Oh man.”, he muttered out loud while his nearly black eyes studied it. That really didn’t look good…at all. With his flustered chocobo dancing beneath him, Dajh kept a stiff hand on his bird and glanced at the sky. There should be plenty of sunlight to go down there and see what had happened to those that had been in the ship.
With a gulp, Dajh fought back the queasy feeling that he got. He hadn’t been around death in humans much before, so the possibility of running down there to find a dead body was slightly terrifying. For a brief moment Dajh wondered if he should turn back and find his father. After all, his father would know what to do, right?! Right! Of course he would know what to do. But there wasn’t time. What if someone wasn’t dead but hurt really bad? Forcing the queasy feeling down, Dajh forced himself to relax and clucked to get his bird going.
When he got to the wreckage, Dajh was surprised to find no one around. Not a soul seemed to be present near the wreckage. Huh…odd. With furrowed eyebrows, Dajh found himself poking his head inside where someone had seemed to slide open a part of it. No one. “Hello?” All he got in return was the echo of his own voice. “Well that’s odd.”
At that moment his bird seemed to get the idea to try and bug him. Dajh tried to shoo the bird who had gotten a part of his shirt in its beak and was tugging him in another direction. “Not now Fritz.”, he mentioned in annoyance, before his attention was caught. “Wait…” Peering in the direction the chocobo seemed to be pulling him in, he then glanced back at the mangled ship. “Think they went that way?” He couldn’t be sure, but maybe… Well, it was worth a shot anyway. “Okay okay,” he muttered to his bird while he once more swung up on the back of the bird and started in the direction his chocobo had been pulling him in.
{NOTES} I dunno what this post was, but...oh well? XD And it's weird to have a 6 year old boy in pictures when he's actually 16 years old...thanks FF13-2, thaaanks |

"Three months worth of plunder, gone! And all that damage. Poor Baby..."
If anyone asked, Penelo would forever deny that she had named her ship 'Baby' because she'd already had to listen to Vaan nearly wet himself with hysteria when he'd found out and that had been embarrassing. He'd shut up quick enough when she told him that it wasn't as if she could call it 'Vaan' because it didn't aim for insane situations where it would likely end up dying. Apparently calling it Vaan would have been more appropriate in the end. It had taken her months to convince her usually frugal self that Baby was worth splashing out on and now her inner financier was bordering on crying. The only reason she was talking aloud was to take her mind off her rumbling stomach while she walked. She hadn't eaten before take off because the flight to Bhujerba really didn't take that long if she gunned it like she had been and she loved having lunch while at the Skygrounds. The view there was one of her favourite in all of Ivalice. She suspected that Vaan and Balthier had rubbed off on her some because she had never been as fascinated with the sky as she was after travelling with them. After years of being under Imperial rule and feeling what it was like to fly in a real sky ship she had developed a deep running love of anything that signified freedom and there wasn't anything that signalled 'freedom' to her like a wide open sky. Her stomach growled again and for the first time the blonde regretted her recent fortune. She had gotten used to being able to afford three meals a day again and it was only now that she realised that she had forgotten how to be hungry. Before the rebellion she had adjusted to being almost constantly hungry as she ate less than the others, usually splitting her portion in half to allow more food for whichever kid was looking particularly lean that day. She had known how to be hungry a little too well actually, as she had been unable to up her meal intakes for a long time, which had garnered her some odd looks when the others on their journey had noticed. No one had mentioned it, a fact that she still appreciated today. While she wasn't ashamed of the circumstances she'd been in, she didn't exactly like to talk about it because those discussions always led to people asking how she'd ended up as an orphan and that wasn't something she wanted to think about. Basch was the only one out of the entire group, excluding Vaan of course, that she might be willing to one day tell her whole story as she trusted him to not give her the usual empty platitudes if she did tell him. Although, Fran probably wouldn't either but the Viera was not as approachable as the new Judge Magister, which said volumes about both of them given that Basch was hardly the warm and cuddly type. Of course, if she only stuck to talking the 'warm and cuddly' types she may as well move in with Sorbet because moogles were the only race she knew that didn't have plenty of sharp edges to their personalities. Except maybe the Giza Rabbit. They were certainly pretty fluffy and warm looking. Maybe they were the same if you caught one and cuddled it. They were pretty fast runners though and that made them hard to catch so she had never tried it. Perhaps she'd give it a go when she managed to get home. Wait, how had she gone from noticing how hungry she was to contemplating the fluffiness of Giza Rabbits? Penelo shook her head from side to side to clear her thoughts, barely noticing as her braids clicked together at the motion. Clearly the combination of hunger and a blow to the head was messing with her. She'd be more concerned about the possible bad effects of that once she managed to find either food or civilisation. Something told her that the latter wasn't going to be as easy to find as she wished it would be. That was mostly due to the fact that her feet were starting to ache and she suspected that blisters were going to make an unwelcome appearance. The faint sound of footsteps made her spin and search for the cause. She really didn't want to get eaten. Trying to pinpoint the source of the noise. she spotted something. Was that...a chocobo? The distant sight of the familiar bird made her slump in relief. If there were chocobos then the rest of the fauna was also likely to be familiar. And even if it wasn't, chocobo's surely had enough meat on them for a meal...Feeling slightly guilty for considering eating one of the adorable feathered creatures, she still readied a spell in her hand. Her need to eat would always trump guilt. She'd spent enough time almost starving to death because of guilt over killing animals, she didn't intend to start that nonsense again. Because he had absolutely no idea which direction to take, Dajh loosened the reins and allowed his feathered friend to do the leading. In the two years that he’d had the bird – just a little chick then, Dajh had trained the big classically yellow bird to do quite a few things. It had first started when Sazh had noted the birds attachment to his young son and wanted to try something out. He’d had Dajh hide on the Steppes, miles away from the ranch, and set the young bird after him. It hadn’t taken the bird hardly any time at all to track the young boy down and reunite himself with him. After they’d figured out that he seemed to have a nose for tracking, Dajh had started to widen the horizons. First it had been other people. Dajh had made Sazh do the same thing he had, given his bird something of his father’s to smell and sent him off. Amazingly the bird had done the same thing – less frantically of course, and had eventually found the older man. From there it had been items, both large and small that the bird seemed to be able to find. Dajh thought that he actually seemed to listen to the commands that he spoke and go from there, but it seemed to more of an instinct than anything else. No matter, the bird was good at finding things.
When they’d gone some distance, Dajh got sick of constantly checking their surroundings. “You let me know if anything comes up, alright Fritz?” With that being said, Dajh tucked his legs under the wings of his bird to stabilize himself and leaned forward to rest against the warm and soft neck that was so common to the chocobos that he adored so much. While Fritz continued to trot over the rugged land of the Steppe’s, Dajh allowed himself to be lulled into a sleepy state, assured that the bird he was riding would give him a proper warning if something came up that was unusual.
And despite not ever actually falling asleep, Dajh was brought back by his chocobo changing stride. When he went from a trot to a walk, the young teenager straightened up and settled himself properly on the bird again. He heard the voice faintly over the nervous rustling his bird was making. “Dinner?”, he spoke quickly, reining his bird to the side and looking to see what had made the noise. A girl about his age-…well, maybe a little older immediately came into his vision. He realized three things very quickly. The first was the obvious, and that happened to be that she was really…reaaally pretty. Instantly he felt red creeping up his neck at that thought. The second was that she appeared to have a magic spell directly on her fingertips waiting to shoot it out. He pieced the ‘dinner’ comment to the fact that she must be wanting to kill his chocobo and eat it for supper. The third thing he realized was that this girl must be connected to the weird ship he’d seen back there a ways. “Woah, please don’t eat us for dinner.”, he said while eying up her spell.

[/div] to begin,
somewhere only we know
Penelo took a startled step backwards as a person popped up on the back of the chocobo. She had been certain that the bird was wild but the rider said otherwise. Well, it looked like she wasn't getting dinner after all. Sheepishly, she cancelled out the waiting Thundara in her hands and blew lightly on her fingers. Thunder spells always left her feeling rather unpleasant, like when she sat in one position for too long and then tried to stand, only to find that her legs were numb and would be essentially useless for several minutes afterwards. At least with the spell induced sensation it went away after a few seconds of blowing.
"Sorry, I didn't see you from a distance." She tugged lightly on the end of one of her plaits as she looked over the stranger. He seemed young, not that that was an accurate measurement of his skill or independence, a fact that she knew well. Still, she had the mild urge to pat him on the head and tell him that everything would be alright, an urge that always popped up around anyone younger than her due to her having spent so much of her life watching out for her Rabanastre brood. She didn't think that would go over too well with a stranger though and, really, she was the one in need of help in this situation.
At a second glance she realised that he actually appeared to be somewhere in his late teens and promptly felt old as she remembered she had thought of him as 'young'. She was only twenty but sometimes she felt twice that. More than once she'd had the feeling that if she looked in the mirror she'd see grey hairs and crows feet that wouldn't appear as out of place as they ought to on her face. She didn't really mind that sensation as much as she used to; she had earned it through hard work beyond her years and by taking care of people who needed her help. Surely that was worth a bit of bone deep weariness.
Her brain finally caught up with what was happening and she perked up with a small smile. There was a person on that chocobo. People meant civilisation and food that wasn't so fresh that it could practically get up and walk away from her mouth. It wasn't that she didn't know how to prepare food that fresh, it was simply that she preferred to eat her dinner without remembering the look on its face as it died. That tended to be something of an appetite dampener. Once upon a time it might have even stopped her from eating it at all but she was well past the point of squeamishness when it came to keeping herself alive.
"I'm Penelo. You couldn't tell me where this is, could you? It's just, I crashed my ship over the bluff and I don't really recognise this place." Penelo already knew that, wherever she was, it wasn't Rabanastre. That much was obvious from the grassy terrain which you didn't tend to see much of in the desert outside of her home, even in the Rains. Out of everywhere she had been to, it looked most like Lemures but that was impossible. Lemures was gone and had been for some time now. Besides, she hadn't been anywhere near where Lemures had once been, floating well above the rest of Ivalice.
"This isn't Rozarria is it?" While she also hadn't been anywhere close to Rozarria during her flight, she knew that the landscape didn't fit where she had been so she was resorting to grasping at straws. She had the uncomfortable sensation that something strange, more bizarre than anything she'd been through yet, was going on but that was silly. It was probably just a left over feeling from when she had hit her head. After all, it wasn't the first time she'd ended up far from home by accident. She'd only gotten involved in the Rebellion because Ba'Gamnen kidnapped her. In fact, she strongly suspected she wouldn't have even known it was happening until after if he hadn't; Vaan probably wouldn't have stopped long enough to tell her. After that, she'd been dragged to Lemures by the auracite while trying to stop Vaan from doing something stupid. All accidents and she'd handles them all fine.
This time around she would simply find a settlement, do some work to earn enough gil to buy a new ship and then she'd be on her way home in no time. How hard could it be? She'd been earning gil on her own for years and keeping a plethora of people fed and clothed at the same time was surely more taxing than just taking care of herself. If she stuck to the budget she already had then she'd save enough money for a new ship in no time. Easy....

Lookin’ for a sign of life {WORDS } 708 {TAGGED } Penelo {WEARING} Something! Dajh found himself nervously chuckling a little bit when the girl said that she hadn’t been able to see him from the distance. "Oh, that? That's totally alright." Though he’d been close to death – and in what you could call death once – a few times in his life, one never ceased to feel their heart beat fast when they avoid great injury or death. And while he didn’t know how powerful her magic spells were, he would have gotten pretty seriously hurt had she decided that she did indeed want to eat them both for supper. Or at least Fritz, he seriously hoped that she wouldn’t have eaten him – dead or not.
A moment later she seemed to be off in her own little world. Shifting his weight between his two feet somewhat awkwardly, Dajh glanced up at his bird for a moment while he waited for her to come back to earth. Hopefully it wouldn’t be super long. Then again, if any length of time meant that she wouldn’t try firing anymore magic at them, then he was totally alright with waiting. And…looking. Despite trying to keep his eyes off, Dajh couldn’t help but continue to make little glances back and forth between the girl he’d found and his bird. And he also couldn’t quite help but notice that she looked…
Oh man. If it could be seen, red would be creeping up his neck with a vengeance. He couldn’t help but notice the…the…uh…lack of clothes she had on. Now, people here on Pulse didn’t seem to like wearing a whole lot of clothes either, but there was something about…well…oh man. Gulping once, Dajh squinted his eyes and peered toward the ground more, scuffing his boot against the ground while she hopefully started talking or saying something, instead of just looking so nice in her…clothes. Yes, or lack of.
’Gah!’ Where was his mind?
FINALLY...er…finally she actually had something to say again, and Dajh was more than happy to concentrate on that. It helped get his mind off…other things. “Uh…oh, yeah, heya Penelo, I’m Dajh! Dajh Katzroy.” And…where were-oh yeah. Maqui had talked to him about the new people that seemed to be popping up around Gran Pulse the last time he had gone to Academia. “You’re on Gran Pulse.”, he said quickly. He sure hoped that she didn’t ‘freak out on him or anything…he really hoped she wouldn’t, because he didn’t know if he could handle that, or have any idea what to do. “I saw the ship a bit ago, Fritz and I went to go check it out.” , he said while gesturing toward his chocobo beside him.

Penelo appreciated the kid not holding a grudge about her almost frying him. His acceptance of her apology meant that the conversation was unlikely to turn unnecessarily uncivil if she accidentally said something insulting. Wherever she was was far enough away from Dalmasca for there to be a good chance of different customs and it was possible that something which would have been innocuous in Rabanastre would be considered highly offensive here. She had run into similar trouble in Archades once when she had made a gesture that meant 'alright' for her but apparently led to her calling the merchant a son of a whore. It wasn't just their past crimes that made her avoid going back to Archades much any more.
She smiled gently at him as he introduced himself. He seemed nervous, which was reasonable enough around a stranger but she didn't mean to come across as intimidating. She imagined Vaan's reaction to someone calling her alarming, hysterical laughter most likely, and quickly decided that maybe being seen as intimidating just once wouldn't be so bad. Alas, that was highly unlikely. The only scary thing about her was her cooking and she knew it. She could hold her own in a fight but was painfully aware that, at least when measured against her previous associates of sky pirates and soldiers, she was a lightweight.
"It's nice to meet you Dajh."
Her brain clicked into high gear when he told her that she was on Gran Pulse. The blonde mentally flicked through every map of Ivalice she could remember seeing, trying to recall where exactly Gran Pulse was. She had always had a good memory for maps, something that was rather vital when you played navigator for a sky pirate who was inclined to forget everything but the ship whenever he went out. She tried not to think about the time he had forgotten her and taken half an hour to notice. She had made certain that he wouldn't make that mistake again through a combination of nagging and forcing him to eat her cooking. As much as she hated being so bad at cooking, she appreciated its usefulness as a weapon. Sure, she could now make basic meals that were actually edible but all she had to was think about adding some flair and the whole thing went to pot. After a moment of frowning in concentration she bit her lip nervously as she came to a conclusion she didn't like whatsoever. She realised that she had never before come across any reference to a place called Gran Pulse. Even Lemures, previously thought to not exist before they...well...broke it, was at least known of in the form of a myth. Even if the land had been forgotten about there ought to have been something left, a story here, a picture there. She took a deep breath and exhaled heavily. Something strange had happened to her, that much was obvious. "Oh...yes...my ship..." Penelo mumbled distractedly in acknowledgement. She wasn't normally so rude as to ignore someone who was talking to her but the puzzle of where she was and how she'd gotten there was irritating her. There were lots of things she didn't know or understand, like the finer workings of a royal court or how much spice was considered too much, but she always, always, had some idea of where she was. She had lost her family, her home and her innocence but she'd never lost her bearings so completely before and it frightened her. "Dajh...where exactly are we? In relation to Dalmasca?" Even as she asked the blonde had the sinking feeling that the answer to her question, whatever it was, would not be one she wanted to hear and she braced herself for bad news. While she didn't know just how much the answer would rock the foundations of her world, there was a quiet voice in the back of her head saying to pay careful attention, that what was said next would be incredibly important. As long as she didn't panic she could handle it; she'd surely faced down worse horrors than being a little lost. Lookin’ for a sign of life {WORDS } 606 {TAGGED } Penelo {WEARING} Something! Dajh had to frown slightly at the thought of her ruined ship. Since as long as he could remember he’d had a father that had drilled respect for airships into his head. His father would probably be unhappy at the sight of a ruined airship as much as he was. Then again he seriously doubted that she had meant to ruin her ship like that, and by the way she seemed to be torn up about it, Dajh figured that she must care about it quite a bit. In recent years he had taken an extreme interest in the airships himself, and had been taking lessons for just as long. He knew just as well as the next pilot that sometimes things came up and there was nothing you could do but to put the ship down in the least destructive way possible. When that happened…well, you either had to have a really good mechanic, or a lot of money to buy another ship.
“Hey, we might be able to fix it!”, he said cheerfully. In the back of his mind he was thinking of the big time inventor from Academia. Though he was that, the blonde had also got his start from humble beginnings – and Dajh happened to know him quite well since Maqui had a love of chocobos as well. If anyone could fix that ship and get it flying again, it would be him. “I know someone that might be able to help get it running again, though I’m not quite sure if he’d be busy or not. No harm in asking though.”, he finally concluded. As soon as he got done talking, his eyes were back to noticing fine little details about the girl standing by him. He could almost feel that redness creeping up the back of his neck. Why did girls have to have all the right things in the right places to make them look so nice? It was hard to do, but he even tried to not look at her. Best just not to look, since he wasn’t quite sure what to do with the way he was feeling.
Her next question left him flabbergasted though. “Uh…” Shifting his weight between feet for a moment, Dajh finally perked up. “Oh! Is Dalmasca a new village that popped up? My dad said that there was a new one by Taejin’s Tower that was going to be going soon. Is that your village name?” Dajh thought that made perfect sense in his brain. And if that were the case, they were far west of where she needed to be. “But my chocobo ranch isn’t that far south of here. Do you want to go there and we can get you back to your village soon?”
