This seems like a nice, quiet town. Max was seated on the beach watching the water absently as the waves rolled across the sand. His knees were drawn up to his chest as he rested his chin on his kneecaps with a tiny smile on his face. In this strange world, it was nice to just sit and relax in a safe town. The citizens didn't seem to have a care in the world as they went about their daily lives. Children played in the town and along the beach, screaming gleefully as they chased each other around. That kind of life had never really been an option for Max. Archades was quite a bit different than the town of New Bodhum, but his own personality was also a factor. He couldn't remember ever running around with other kids. He always allowed them to leave him behind, as he was too shy to call them out on it.
The water level crept towards his boots, and he scooted himself backwards in the sand to avoid getting wet. The children were coming closer, and the teenager watched them curiously out of the corner of his eye. It seemed like a version of 'tag' as they chased each other around the beach. His lips twitched as one of the smaller boys dropped in the sand and rolled backwards to avoid being touched, before pushing himself up and sprinting in the other direction. The larger (and older looking) boy was too slow to react, and lost his advantage. Smart kid. It was a smart game for the kids to play, as it taught them how to avoid being caught. It could buy them precious time if they were ever cornered by a monster.
All of a sudden, there was a loud wailing coming from the other side of him, and he whipped his head around in surprise. A little girl lay not too far from him sobbing into the sand. Max turned towards her and dropped his legs so they were lying flat on the ground. "Are...are you...ok?" he asked softly, tilting his head a bit as he studied the girl. It looked as though she had simply fallen. Her watery eyes met his as she sniffled pathetically, before giving him a slow head-shake indicating 'no'. He stared back at her in turn. Now what do I do? Though it seemed his attention was enough to keep her distracted, as she crawled her way through the sand towards him still sniffling and the odd tear still leaking from her eyes.
What is she doing? Max's eyes widened comically as she got closer, and he even leaned back a bit instinctively. But she wouldn't be deterred, and eventually she was right next to him. Blinking up at him from the sand, her earlier cries seemed to have been long forgotten already. Both of his hands supported him as he leaned back, trying to get away from the strange little girl, and she gave him a quick grin before pouncing on his near arm. Not expecting her to actually do anything, Max gave out a very unmanly yelp of surprise as he pitched backwards, his support going out from under him at the contact. The little girl started giggling hysterically at his reaction, and his cheeks heated up in embarrassment. Even a CHILD knows how to get to me!
"Hugs!" Max had barely gotten his hands under him to push himself back up when she pounced again, this time landing on his chest. Falling back once more with a grunt, he could hear laughter coming from behing him. Great, now my bow is stabbing me in the back. Tilting his head back, he saw a few of the ladies giggling at his misfortune, and he let out a small sigh. Guess it doesn't matter where I am. The little girl made herself comfortable on his chest, and Max continued to lie there decidedly uncomfortable with the attention.
"Ok. I think...you're ok now." Indeed she was quite happy with herself at this point. "You should go play some more." Max's voice was still extremely soft, as he was not familiar with dealing with children. Forcing himself back up to a seated position, the child slid down his chest and into his lap where she latched onto his coat still giggling. I don't mean play with ME. Another sigh left his lips as he looked around for some sort of help, but there was none to be found. None willing, anyway. There were lots of adults around. "Go on. Off you - "
Screams came from further down the beach, though these weren't shrieks of delight from the children. They were filled with terror. Both Max and the little girl in his lap jumped at the sound and turned to see what was happening. The girl whimpered and clung to his jacket even tighter as they saw the creature that was slowly making its way to the edge of town. Max's heart rate picked up in fear, and his eyes darted down to the little girl that had taken a liking to him. For the first time since she had started to interact with him, the Archadian wrapped his arm around her as he stood up, easily lifting her back to her feet. Now that he was standing, she seemed even smaller. She couldn't have been more than 5 years old. "Go home! Ok?" he said without a stutter and he gave her a little push towards the small houses that littered the beach.
Taking off towards the entrance of the town once he had picked up his quiver of arrows, Max hopped over the small fence as he pulled his bow from his shoulder. Drawing an arrow back, he focused his powers to draw the water from the air around him and encase his arrow with it. Before he released the projectile, held his breath for a moment to stop himself from panting. Now that he was a little more steady, he let his arrow fly and smirked as it hit his mark. This thing is huge! Now that he was closer, he could see it a little more clearly. He had no idea what kind of monster it was, but it was creepy looking. "Uh oh." Paying attention to the monster's movements, it had changed direction slightly and now was headed straight for him.
That...wasn't very smart. But I can't go back to the town! No, he couldn't lead the monster back towards all of the innocent people behind him. That left only one option. "C-come on, then!" His voice squeaked in fear, which was a little embarrassing but Max was too concerned with his life to care. He took off running past the monster, but he didn't realize just how long those arms were. The monster was already winding up, and took a swing at him. A flash of a memory shot through him at the boys playing tag, and Max dropped to the ground in an attempt to roll backwards and escape the sweeping arm. It...didn't work as planned. He was still struck by the appendage and sent sprawling across the ground. His bow dropped from his hand at the impact, and he coughed as he tried to regain his breath. He wasn't hurt too badly, but he was definitely dazed and confused as to what had just happened. Yep. I'm an idiot. I'm gonna die.
Max rolled over and pushed himself to his knees with some difficulty. Looking up at the monster, his shoulders dropped as he saw his bow was now on the other side of it as it stumbled ever closer. Now what? He couldn't very well run, and he had nothing left to fight with unless he started throwing his arrows. Unfortunately most of his arrows littered the ground, showing the direction in which he had flown from the impact. Stupid Max. Unable to decide what to do, he simply sat there as he tried to think of another option, watching the creature stumble closer and closer.
