AERITH GAINSBOROUGH HEY THERE, THEY CALL ME AERITH AND I'M CURRENTLY TWENTY-TWO YEARS OLD. I'M FROM THE WORLD OF GAIA WHERE I AM THE LAST CETRA. I GO FOR ANYONE AND I WILL THROW MY WEIGHT BEHIND NO ONE (NEUTRAL). ------------------------------------------------- |
[/b] It has many uses: whacking people, whacking objects, knocking things off high shelves, tying hobo bags on the end of and hitting home runs. Aerith can't do any serious harm with it and she's not adept at blocking a lot of attacks with it, but she can become quite a nuisance with that thing in hand!
WHITE MATERIA
» Aerith also seems to possess her White Materia, though it's uncertain whether she could summon Holy in this new land. For now, it's a trinket.[/ul]
Abilities:[/b] Though the familiar materia from Gaia does not seem to exist in this new world, it's of no matter to Aerith. As the daughter of a Cetra, she has always had the innate ability to harness and use magic. Exclusively, Aerith acts almost like a cross between a red mage and a white mage, utilizing elemental spells and healing ones rather than anything dark. She's fairly experienced, so it's best to expect that they'll be high leveled.
GREAT GOSPEL
» A far-reaching and taxing spell that allows Aerith to call upon a healing rain. The bigger the radius, the more it drains on her physically.
PLANET COMMUNION
» Though it's not Gaia, Aerith still feels a sort of connection with this new world and has come to her own conclusion that it has its own sort of Lifestream. It's a faint feeling, though, and she thinks that because the Cetra are not native to this world, she does not have that instant, open connection that she did before. At the moment, she's working under the assumption that the longer she spends here, the greater the voices will become. Until then, she can only feel the Fal'cie and Cieth when they're nearby.
GREEN THUMB
» As stated before, Aerith isn't as connected to this world as she was to her home world. This doesn't stop her from utilizing the tentative hold to encourage the growth of plants around her.[/ul]
Personality: Aerith Gainsborough is not a saint. She is not a regular martyr. She is not untiringly patient. For all those who approach her with those thoughts in mind, you will most definitely be disappointed. It seems that many sources inaccurately depict this young woman, but this application won't.
Aerith is a slums girl at heart, and you can tell it from the confident way she walks about to the upheld chin and fire in her eyes. She's passionate, unrestrained, wearing her emotions like masks in a play for all to see. Aerith laughs just a little too loud and scowls just a little too hard to be cultured. Her exclamations of surprise could leave you deaf, and her tears could leave you thinking that crying really isn't that attractive (especially if snot is involved). This is a young woman who is not afraid to speak her mind, for better or worse, and has been known to engage even the most incoherent of drunks in a battle of wits.
She's also been known to kick mean people in the shins. When she was younger, Aerith would wrestle and tumble with the other slum kids, putting boys in headlocks and pulling on the pigtails of her fellow girls. She would also take upon the job as backup for pickpockets, hitting the unfortunate prey right where the sun doesn't shine to impede his task of catching up with them. She'd sling prickly remarks with curmudgeons and play pranks on the neighbors. Though she's older and less likely to engage in violent and rude behavior, Aerith still has residual pieces of her old demeanor.
Besides being confident in herself and her thoughts and knowing when to throw a punch, Aerith still finds herself just as blunt as she was in youth. Yes, she's more likely to edit her comments when speaking to elders and kind people, but if left with the opportunity to make a clever remark, she'll take the chance in a heartbeat. The younger kids of the slums knew that while Aerith was the first person they could go to when something was wrong, they also knew she'd be equally likely to make a cutting remark about dumb behavior.
Just like her youthful self, Aerith is loyal. Once she takes a cause upon herself, she's liable to stick through to the very end. She'll walk to the ends of the world and back and not say a word in complaint. As far as people go, once Aerith considers you a friend or ally, you are a friend and ally for life. There is no limit to what she'd try to accomplish to help you, and to argue for her to stay safely behind would and will be met with blatant disregard.
Perhaps she was rather crass in childhood, but another good quality that survived was her desire to make people happy. When she wasn't helping pickpockets, Aerith was just as likely to run others down to retrieve an old lady's wallet. She'd steal back what was stolen from her friends. She'd nurse animals back to health, and she was usually always willing to lend a hand. Now that most of the wild child in her has settled down, Aerith finds even more ways to assist the people and world around her. Running errands, healing people, offering conversation, offering smiles and the like are things she's ready to do.
Aerith is entirely a people person. She's as curious as a baby and as awed as one, too. And while Aerith is quick to irritate, it is insanely hard to spike any true ire within her, meaning that while she'll scowl and scold, grudges aren't something she holds onto for very long. She's a forgiving person, albeit less graceful than most of those variety, and second, third, even tenth chances are likely to be given by her. Perhaps it's because she feels this omnipresent connection with the worlds and their creatures that she feels the people are also intimately connected to her. Aerith, despite her faults, feels an obligation to do her part and she fulfills it happily enough.
I suppose, if one were to compare her before and after her death, they might notice that there are times when she goes a little quiet, speaks a little softer and avoids eye contact. Though most strangers would see a vibrant young woman who doesn't look at all as if she's stared death in the face, old acquaintances and the perceptive might pick up on the nuances. Aerith is wiser than she was in her youth. She carries the wisdom of the Lifestream and her ancestors. She understands the hefty price that comes with choosing the best decision for the most people, rather than just the people she loves.
History: When people claim that Aerith is the
last Cetra, they're technically fudging the truth. While she is--
was?-- the last person alive on Gaia with Cetra blood running through her veins, Aerith had a human father. She was born on February 7th, 1985 in Icicle Inn to her biological mother Ifalna and her father Professor Gast Faremis of ShinRa Corp. The glowing family with their fireplace and cherry cheeked newborn was a picturesque sight that lasted a total of twenty days. The reach of ShinRa's eyes reached farther than either anticipated, and when both the last ancient being and expensive research are on the line, there was no playing around. A colleague of Gast's, Hojo, tracked down the fugitive pair, killing Gast and taking both Ifalna and Aerith back into the custody of ShinRa.
And so Aerith was plunged into seven years of experimentation and the sterile, white walls of her cell. Though she would go on to suffer other tragedies and losses-- one of which would occur shortly after finding her freedom from captivity-- it is her earliest memories that Aerith holds firm to. If asked, she will not reveal the details of her experiences, and, perhaps, it's for the best. Only another living being subjected to that kind of torture would understand.
When Aerith and her mother managed to escape from ShinRa headquarters, it was a bittersweet turn in her life. Though her mother's efforts had gained her a life beyond hospital gowns and needles, it came at the price of losing the only person she'd ever known to care for her. Injured, Ifalna only managed to bring Aerith as far as the train platform in Sector 7's slums before succumbing to her wounds. It was luck, then, that a woman waiting for her husband's return from the Wutai War found the generosity to promise Aerith's mother that she would take care of her child.
For fifteen years, Elmyra would raise Aerith as her own child. Grieving the loss of her husband, the older woman found comfort and family in the wide eyed, skittish child that was grieving the loss of her mother. Though ShinRa attempted to gain Aerith's cooperation through demonstrative shows and the rather quiet presence of Tseng, she refused them. And though there was that ever present threat that they would eventually tired of wooing her, Aerith found the stability and safeness in her environment to grow into a confident, sassy young woman.
There was an old, dilapidated church near her home. As the years past, she found comfort in its pews and the promise in its soil, and despite the established impossibility of breathing life into the slums of Sector 5, Aerith grew flowers.
Of course, a dilapidated church was not the best place to find privacy. Its rough had a habit of caving in, bringing the tumbling bodies of young men with splintered wood. The first was Zack Fair. He had dark hair and bright eyes and the nature of a puppy, and Aerith fell for him. Though circumstances would regularly keep them apart and, finally, permanently so, his love left marks on her heart. The memory of his suggestions left marks on her life. Just like her future friends would wear red to remember her coming sacrifice, Aerith wore a pink ribbon to remember Mr. Zack Fair.
It should be noted that until she died, Aerith was certain that Zack had run off like a floozy with the next pretty girl he saw, and so while she tied the ribbon on her hair every morning, she did so with a curse at her weak, girlish heart.
But then she found out he died...
So she never mentions that part.
The next person to fall through her roof was Cloud Strife, which, in hindsight, was very opportune because shortly after he woke up, Reno of ShinRa's Turks happened to stop by
to pay a visit capture Aerith. With the promise of a date, Cloud agreed to help her escape and returned her home. It was very
inopportune for him, though, because he was not going to shake off Aerith so easily. Intent upon not being left behind when excitement was afoot, Aerith was determined to tag along, and Cloud was forced to concede.
The plan had been to find Tifa, but, as with all video games, movies and books, the plan was never intended to go smoothly. Working under the assumption that Tifa was in the hands of Don Corneo, Aerith convinced Cloud to cross-dress so that they could both infiltrate his mansion.
That plan worked, though they found out that the girl they intended to rescue didn't need any rescuing at all. Oh well. It seemed that Don Corneo had information directly related to AVALANCHE and ShinRa-- namely that ShinRa was planning to drop a plate to destroy the entirety of AVALANCHE's base of operations-- and it also seemed that the information came too late. Though everyone tried to stop ShinRa, their efforts failed.
As Aerith moved to take Marlene, Barret's adopted daughter, out of harm's way, she was captured by her old Turk friend Tseng and taken into ShinRa custody. Luckily, her second stay was infinitely shorter than her first. Cloud, Tifa and Barret set her free and cemented the fact that Aerith, whether she had planned to or not, had found herself a motley group of friends to tag along with. As Aerith came to accept the duties that came with her heritage, she also came to aid the group in different ways as they attempted to stop Sephiroth. She deciphered the Temple of the Ancients' mysteries in order to find the Black Materia.
And though Sephiroth managed to gain it from them, she was not going to let them be stopped so easily. Sneaking off as Cloud recovered from the effects of Sephiroth's manipulation, Aerith went to a temple beneath the Forgotten Capital to pray for Holy with the White Materia kept tucked in her hair bow. Unfortunately, it was in her attempt to aid her friends that Aerith lost her life. As she prayed, Sephiroth descended from his hiding place, sword aimed, and she died instantly from the severity of her wound.
This, however, was not the end of Aerith's story. Though her body was laid to rest, she was not ready yet to dissipate into the Lifestream. Gifted with the strength of her Cetra heritage, Aerith not only remained a separate entity from the Lifestream, she
commanded it. It was this power-- along with the efforts of her friends against Sephiroth-- that helped keep Meteor (summoned with the Black Materia by Sephiroth) from completely destroying the planet. AVALANCHE defeated Sephiroth, and Aerith pushed the Lifestream to aid Holy in completely destroying Meteor.
The destruction wrought by Sephiroth and Jenova's influence with in him didn't end there. Just like Aerith, Sephiroth avoided dissolution into the Lifestream and, instead, infected the Lifestream with Geostigma. Though Aerith found ways to heal the dead and contain the damage, she could not completely stop the disease and decided to contact Cloud to stop the damage on Gaia itself. For a moment, she considered imitating Sephiroth's creation of remnants in order to do so, but decided against it soon after, preferring to use her own form to make contact with her friends.
As Cloud and the others faced battle against the three remnants of Sephiroth, Aerith aided in her own way. She healed them when they're injured. She transfered enough energy to Cloud to give him the last bit he needed to defeat the summoned Bahamut SIN. She appeared to Cloud in visions, talking to him, consoling him and attempting to wedge out his grief so that he could find the strength of will to fight again. Aerith left messages for Cloud on his phone, and as he finally defeated the threat of Geostigma, Aerith called the phones of the people, telling all those infected where to go to be healed.
She then called upon the energy of the Lifestream to summon her Great Gospel, casting it with a range so great it covered the entire city, healing those who were ill. Then, as Cloud awoke from his final battle, Aerith appeared to him one last time to say goodbye, spending the rest of her time in the Lifestream merely playing spectator to the efforts of her friends.
That is, until she woke up in a strange land.
