There was only a slight hum of the wind. The engines were ever so silent, it was mute to be put in better words. Lindblum was a good girl, who would do anything she was commanded, never once failing to accomplish the task given her. She was the best ship in Cocoon and under the command of the Cavalry, providing a wide area for all needs, equipped with the best programs.
Brigadier General Cid Raines was comfortable in his office, which was large and fresh with minimal decorations. His desk, chair and a few seats were what he needed. Of course, there was a locker at his left side, big enough to contain many weapons and files. Who knew? Perhaps, they were full of secrets. But he had nothing to lock away in order to hide. The only secret he had was something he had to carry along. Taking risks wasn't something new for Raines. He had taken a lot in his life, for a better world. For a better cause. He had perfect ideals and a good plan. It was not the fame and fortune he was after. Such things were never a bother for him, even when he became a popular face due to his rank in military units.
But the plan wasn't as good as it was supposed to be. It had failed before he could even get started. Raines had failed the most.
It was almost too ironic how the tables had turned like this, putting him in a position he never wanted to be. It was against everything he believed him. Yet he had no other choice. For the first time in his life, Cid Raines felt utterly desperate. He was completely helpless.
Giving his perfect smile and walking around with his high confidence were not difficult tasks. What really difficult was making a choice.
Was there even a way for him to win?
The knock on his door was able to pull the Commander back to reality. His ice blue eyes had been staring into the tablet in his hand for too long, he didn't even read the report after the second paragraph. He quietly placed the thin device on his tidy desk and reached for his white gloves which were resting on a cream coloured book. It was only a reflex how easily he slipped them on to his elegant hands, covering a certain mark from eyes. Being a very tall man, Raines had quite long fingers. But he always had a natural grace, always looking good and gentle, even when he didn't try at all.
"Come in." He spoke loud enough for the other to hear him, then leaned back on his comfortable leather chair. It was white, matching everything in this office and also matching his knight-like uniform. Only contrast made here was his raven hair, which was falling over his forehead and a few strands reaching in between his eyes.
The door was opened with a hiss and a young man with blond hair stepped in. He was a lieutenant in Cavalry, who was responsible for routes and stops. The younger man looked proud, but also a little nervous in the same time. It was like any other lower rank being nervous around a commander.
"Sir, we will be reaching the meeting spot in fifteen minutes." He spoke quickly, his eyes were on Raines who was still at his desk. The gaze was returned, along with a small smirk. Something which was Raines' trademark. Confident, smug and powerful.
"Got it, lieutenant." Rained gave a nod and picked his tablet up from his desk once again, wanting to finish reading the previous report before they arrived their destination.
Though, the blond man remained in where he was, not taking his leave yet. It was able to make Raines lift his ice blue eyes up from his tablet and look at the lieutenant. "Is there something else you want to add?" He asked in a silky tone, edges of his lips were tugged upward just very slightly.
The lieutenant seemed even more nervous now, but he was nodding his head quickly. "Sir, I wanted to say..." He stopped and cleared his throat. "I wanted to say that you should be careful. This group cannot be trusted in this meeting. Maybe you should wear a bullet-proof armour." His voice almost cracked, he knew he had no right to tell Commander Raines what to do. He could even get a punishment for this. But Raines just smiled at the blond man, charming and strong as usual.
"Thank you for your concern, lieutenant. But I do not need such. I'm not easy to hurt." He said with too much self-confidence. "You are dismissed."
The lieutenant left the office and the door was closed. While Raines appreciated the concern of his crew, he was sure he wasn't going to fail today. No, not today.
He already went to hell and came back alive. Or was he still in his very own hell?
It didn't matter anymore.
