Cecil was glad that need motivated him. If it did not, he would have never set foot in this city, where every alley and dark doorway seemed to hide something that Cecil would not want anywhere close to his wife. As he took a long glance down one of those same alleys that they passed, he instinctively took a closer step to the woman at his side, his hand moving to her back as if such little support would shield her from any danger that emerged from within the sticky air that seemed to breathe out from the narrow corridor. The uncomfortable feeling left as they passed by it, and Cecil’s attention again returned to scanning the streets – paved streets, something he’d never known until he’d come to this world – for their destination, after he’d taken another glance at Rosa and spoken. ”The man at the port never said we’d be walking for days to find this place he was advertising,” Cecil said quietly into her ear, with a rather disgusted shake of his head. ”I hope we find it more welcoming than these streets, or we may need to come up with another idea. Something about this whole city doesn’t feel right to me.”
Unfortunately for the two of them, it seemed as if they needed this city for the time being. As they’d been told several times, Initium, as the natives called it, was the only place with enough room for a family. Cecil was not spoiled by living in a palace, considering he’d spent so much of his time just before marrying Rosa having to deal with the hardship of moving a group from place to place in conditions that were not the best, but he could tell by looking at many of these buildings that whatever families were living within were not living at all comfortably. Cecil had been encouraged when the man back at the port, who was apparently receiving refugees, had told them that they could find a place to stay here in this city and been nice enough to provide them with the directions and the means to take the residence as their own if they wanted it. It seemed a rather overly-streamlined way of operating, but in a time of war, he supposed it was probably common. Still, he wondered again. Cecil had asked questions; now he wished he had asked a few more, and he and Rosa would not have been so far out in the city now with regrets creeping into their minds.
Still, he could count it a blessing that no one had bothered them. Again giving Rosa a light squeeze around the waist, he gave her his undivided attention. ”If you want to leave…don’t hesitate to tell me.” It wasn’t that Cecil was too afraid of whatever was here to stay, but he had to consider his situation. He had a pregnant wife, and he was in a world that neither of them truly understood in any means. They had no friends to call on that they’d managed to find thus far, and Cecil had no troops he could call on when he needed them. Comfort had left them in favor of constant and complete uncertainty. He had to consider the toll that it might take on both of them –Rosa, especially – if all they found were problems that would constantly pile on them. The thought brought a quiet sigh from Cecil’s chest. He shouldn’t worry until they’d seen the place and could make a judgment. Who knew? They could cross the next street and find a much better situation.
They did cross the next street, and what they found was…somewhat better. The buildings didn’t seem quite as packed, and though they were shorter, they all didn’t seem to be those…tiny cubicles from the last section of the city. Cecil looked at the “datapad” that the man had handed him, punching the screen on it with his finger to make the map from before reappear. Cecil didn’t even trust the technology in his own hand at this point, staring at it until it lit up the name of the street again and pinpointed the housing that they were supposed to find. Only then did he hold the screen in front of Rosa’s face for her to see. ”I…think we’re on the opposite end of the street from where we need to be,” he guessed, inclining his head opposite them.

It was with curious eyes that the blonde studied the world around her. With no hint of nerves, she walked beside her husband and took in their surroundings, not seeming to notice that they might be in any danger, but with a simplistic look she took everything in. Her husband, after all, was there beside her, and Rosa had the utmost confidence that he could protect both her and their unborn babe if anything were to suddenly appear to be a threat. Still, there was no hint of anxiety in the aqua eyes. That was what one would expect for a queen coming to a new world, as they were convinced of. How and why, she had yet to fully comprehend, but the how and why didn’t matter all that much. All that mattered was that after a few frantic days, she had found her husband, or he had found her.
Despite being used to his touch, her sensitive skin picked up his light touch and sent a shiver down her back, quickly causing her eyes to leave their curious view of this new world and go toward Cecil walking there beside him. As soon as she saw the tense look on his face, she realized that he seemed to be much more worried about their current location than she had seen fit to be. Moving closer to mirror his step, Rosa pressed the flat of her hand against his chest and continued to look up at him, hoping that would calm any nerves he might have. He always had worried far more over her than he should, - though with Kain around it seemed to be necessary - so with that slight touch she hoped it might help.
To further her soothing presence – or what she hoped it was – she tipped up her lips into a smile. “I don’t mind the walk.” Despite having been queen for a short time now, Rosa had gone on the same adventure her husband had, and had at one time been used to walking day in and day out, battling every day to reach their goal. “I hope I can still walk a mile or two without needing to stop to rest. If I cannot-…” Unable to come up with a proper thought of what she might do in that situation; Rosa finally laid her free hand on her stomach and gave him one of her teasingly firm looks. “Then the babe and I will be having a very serious discussion about how unacceptable that is later on tonight.”
When he mentioned that the city didn’t feel right, Rosa’s gaze once more swept around them. Though she couldn’t find anything particularly wrong with the city, she trusted that if her husband felt something was amiss, it was. “It could still be the nerves of what happened to bring us from home, to this place?”, she suggested in a questioning voice. When he lightly squeezed her, she moved even closer and lightly stroked his chest a few times with her fingertips. “I won’t hesitate to tell you anything.” With a sly look on her face, Rosa brought her hand up to pretend to study her fingernails coyly. “Unless you go on a grand adventure and forget to bring me along. I may have to stow away and forget to mention that to you.” Though he might not appreciate the adding of humor to the conversation with a slight quip about his leaving her behind, Rosa figured that they had had plenty of tension and worry the past few days and would need a little bit of lighter humor.
A moment later he decided to pull out the piece of equipment that had yet to stop amazing her. She had never quite seen anything like it, and for that reason was nearly mesmerized at the odd little machine he held in his hands. With it right under her nose, Rosa spent less time looking at what she was supposed to, and more time peering at it in amazement. Still, his voice caused her to actually pay attention, and giving it an extra glance, she looked up and then over at Cecil. “I do believe you’re right.” Pulling away from him lightly, Rosa found the hand that had been possessively attached to her back and slipped hers into it, lightly pulling him in the direction of the opposite street. While she did so, she walked backwards, giving him one of her certain smiles. “Can we find somewhere to eat after we find this housing location?” The light grumble that came from her stomach was not the child that rested there under her small bump of her stomach, but it was just as commanding at gaining her attention. “I must admit, the walk is making me hungry.” And the air that she breathed, and the sight of buildings, and Cecil’s touch, and basically everything else she saw in her senses seemed to somehow trigger the desire for food. Yet another thing she was going to have to have a small talk with her babe about.

Despite his worries and constant need to be aware of their surroundings, Cecil couldn’t help but devote a gaze and a smile to Rosa when her hand made its way to his chest. She did always seem to have a knack for knowing when he was being consumed by some issue that had chosen to play at his mind. That it only took a simple touch from her, and the ever-expressive set of eyes she had, to distract him from whatever else was on his mind was probably for good and bad for the misplaced king of Baron. She had never quite gotten him into trouble before for being the object of his entire attention – save for a few times he had been training for the military and she for the mages, when they’d both been younger and obviously more…mischievous at times (not that he didn’t think they delved into mischief at times now) – but she could indeed cause him to take his guard down at generally any time she wanted. Now was one of those times, with him keeping his smile on her as she spoke before he saw fit to let loose a few chuckles at her words, patting his hand again against her back. ”If it’s one of your usual ‘serious discussions,’ the baby is going to want to grow legs and start walking as soon as possible,” Cecil commented, humorously. Somehow, his mind still could not wrap fully around the fact that a little human was living inside of Rosa – a little human that would look like both of them (or, if the baby was lucky, like Rosa). It sent a little fit of joy through him again to think about it, before his eyes shifted up slightly once more and took in the sights of the city. Hopefully, once the child was born, all three of them would be out of this somewhat miserable place.
Cecil didn’t let the thought dampen his spirits, though, since Rosa was still working to occupy him, and he wasn’t going to make her think he wasn’t appreciative of it. ”It could be,” he said in response to her question about his nerves. ”Admittedly, Gran Pulse made me just as uncomfortable as this place, what with the monsters…” And here, Cecil had not seen a single monster. It was one reason for him to feel better about the place, at the very least. And Rosa was really, really trying to put his mind at ease. He stared at her with a completely amused shake of his head as she “studied” her hand. ”Keep this in mind – it wouldn’t be any adventure without you.” He glanced down to her stomach. ”And you, too.”
It was some relief to know that they were near to the home that the man had assigned to them and that the buildings didn’t all seem as if they were boring in on them from the sky, standing militarily straight and imposing. These residences had much more charm to them than the previous buildings, and the people walking the streets didn’t tend to be of the “hide under a hood” types. Clasping his hand onto Rosa’s as she reached for it and they agreed about the location of the home, he stepped quickly to fall in line with her again and couldn’t help but unleash a strong round of laughter at her comment about getting something to eat. He patted her stomach softly, somehow thinking anything lighter than a tap would harm the baby in some way if he wasn’t careful. ”I’ll find you a meal for a queen as soon as we find the house and take a look at it, I promise you.” Cecil had never known that with pregnancy came…appetite. Yes, Rosa had been eating for two now, but as soon as they’d both found out she was pregnant for sure, her strange requests to him for odd foods – sometimes in the middle of the night, or while they were in court – had been explained. Well, explained in theory. Cecil still could not understand how someone so much smaller than he was could be hungry more often. Still laughing slightly, he pulled her hand up and kissed her fingers at the thought of it.
Yes, she’d certainly gotten him into a better mood.
Cecil let his eyes wander back to the screen that was supposed to tell them where to go. The little green blip that indicated their house came nearer and nearer until Cecil thought he should be able to tell which house was theirs. And he did so – he counted down two more residences to find a little place against a street corner that would, if he was judging right, quite easily fit three or four with only slight inconvenience. Again, it was no palace, but Cecil had to say it put him more at ease. ”It’s on the corner, Rosa,” he told her, pointing the datapad in the direction of it. Only a few extra steps took them to the front of it, and Cecil could say that what sat before him really seemed to be fairly cozy. Turning and casting a mildly eager smile on his wife, he started to lead the way up the steps to the door to use the “key-card” that they had been given if he could figure it out, when a rough voice called out to them.
”What is it you think you’re doing?” Cecil stopped suddenly and turned to regard the source of the voice, finding a broad-shouldered man standing there and leering at them. Instinctively, Cecil stepped only an inch closer to his wife. ”We’re entering the house we were given.” The man’s eyes narrowed, and Cecil’s mood dampened when three other men emerged from around behind one of the other houses, making it clear they were with the first man when they asked him a question. ”I’m about to tell these two that they had better leave this house alone or they’ll have us to answer to,”, the first told one of those approaching.

Rosa’s soft, melodic laughter came as soon as her husband told her that their child would want to escape one of her talks to it. Twisting slightly so that she could still feel his reassuring hand on the small of her back, and see him clearly, Rosa lifted her brow and poked him lightly in the chest, as if to ask what was up. “I should give you a good talking to for saying that, I suppose. Good thing I don’t feel like it.” She wasn’t actually serious about any annoyance over what he said, and only felt amusement over it, but she couldn’t help but give him a hard time if the opportunity presented itself. Besides, he should know her well enough by now to realize if she laughed about something, she wasn’t offended. It did feel good to have him relax and let his guard down for a moment, but she watched as it came right back up, his gaze once more making a clean sweep around them. Rosa didn’t comment on that, however, and simply let him be watchful of their surroundings. She herself appreciated his vigilance of her safety, as well as the baby’s, and though sometimes she did worry that he was going to prematurely age from how nervous he was about keeping her safe, she knew she wasn’t going to change him, and didn’t think she would want to anyway.
In response to his comment about the monsters, her lips tilted into somewhat of a crooked smile – usually one accompanied by a facetious tongue or a mischievous moment. “I thought it was rather exciting with all the monsters roaming around.”, she commented. “It reminded me of home.” A moment later, though, Rosa tried once more to get his thoughts off of every shadow and possible bad situation and on a lighter subject, and was rewarded with seeing his show of amusement, however light it might seem to anyone else. It was in glee that she once more felt a bit of laughter escape her lips. “That’s not what you used to tell me.”, she said with a tilt of her finely arched brow. Leaning closer to him, she acted as if she had a secret to tell him and even lowered her voice. “I much rather your thinking I should come along to leaving me behind in a castle all the time.”
Finally though, they had gotten to their destination. Leading him while walking backwards, Rosa smiled at his light touch and confirmation that he would indeed take her for a meal. That same smile only widened further at his hearty laugh and lips pressed to her fingers. When he let it drop, she moved closer in that same glee she had felt moments before, wrapping her arms around his neck and rising on the tips of her toes to kiss him on the cheek in a moment of affection and appreciation. All the while doing that, she was still attempting to walk backwards, and quickly unclasped her arms from his neck to concentrate on settling herself back by his side, a light spring in her step. "Thank you, Cecil.”
Her excitement continued to build while he pointed out the way and led them over to where they were supposed to be going. Despite having rearranged the castle nearly daily – or overseeing it anyway – Rosa had missed having a place to call their own, in which she could rearrange and decorate as she pleased. And though she had yet to see their new – or temporary anyway – home, she felt nearly giddy with her desire to make it like a real home. Perhaps it was her maternal instinct kicking in that made her want to have a nesting spot, or perhaps it was her natural inclination as a woman. Whatever it was, the spring in her step got lighter and lighter while they made the last few steps to their new house. Rosa refused to let go of his arm in her excitement, even as he produced the key to her door, though she did loosen her grip until it was mostly her fingers methodically to brush up and down his arm.
The deep voice booming from the side nearly caused Rosa to jump, though she stilled that desire and turned in the same moment her husband did. Instantly she judged that this man was no pleasant character, the set in her jaw and eyes simply mirroring her thoughts. Though she had rarely stepped down from a fight, and had no lack of confidence in her own abilities, Rosa was still glad for her husband stepping slightly in front of her. The further these men were away from her and the babe, the better. With a hand on her husband’s back to show him she was still there slightly behind him, Rosa instantly bristled when the three other men appeared out from behind the house, as well as the words of the first man. Unable to find any restraint, Rosa took a challenging step forward, until she was standing at Cecil’s side, her chin lifted to show her defiance. “I do not know who you are, sir, but I find your show of impudent behavior appalling. It has been a long day, we’re hungry, and I would very much like to make our way into our new home without a large oaf getting in the way and pretending he and his uncouth friends own the place.” Having placed both hands on her hips, Rosa was now shooting him a glare that would back any smart person down in their tracks.
Unfortunately for him, he wasn’t smart. Sensing that he wasn’t taking anything she said personally, Rosa deepened her glare. “We would greatly appreciate if you turned and left...while you were still able.”, she added threateningly. With a chuckle that obviously showed he wasn’t taking her seriously, the man cracked his knuckles with his second hand and advanced toward them until he was uncomfortably close. “I’d learn to keep a leash on your bitc-“ Unable to contain herself, Rosa sharply stomped down on the foot of the man with her heel before he could finish what he had been going to say, earning a yelp. "Watch your mouth!" Drawing back sharply, she put herself out of striking distance, even as the man charged forward and took a wild swing at her husband.
Sharply drawing back still more – never having been a close range fighter, Rosa lifted her hand and felt it glowing green even as two of the thugs headed toward her. Even without her staff, she was by no means defenseless, and sent her magic quickly toward them as they ran toward her, hitting them with magic that would slow their movements and impair them. With her hands still glowing, Rosa ducked under a dulled attack and with a quick, easy movement slipped her bow from where she had settled it against her back, held there by the string across her chest. It had been with her when she had been teleported to this place, and thankfully so now. Just as fluidly notching an arrow, Rosa was just in time to turn toward her attacker – arguably still dulled with his movements, though the effects were starting to wear off. Pulling her string back, Rosa put her arrow through the meaty part of his leg, hearing the satisfying yelp. As soon as the first arrow had left her bow, another was notched, quickly sent directly into the backside of the man hopping and trying to dislodge the arrow from his leg. In the meantime, the man that she had dodged the first attack (and who had fallen in his clumsy movements) was now up and looking as if he wanted to rip her head off.
